The Way It Was

I regret that some people will never know the way it was. Until this very moment, the memory of that period slipped by me. I have not thought about those times in several years. When I look back, I understand what Charles Dickens expressed when he wrote, “It was the best of time, it was the worst of times” as life contained both, danger and simplicity. When I think on those days now, I feel bad for some young people who will never know or understand when your parents restricted how early you go outside and how late you could stay. It’s weird to see children that are quite content to be inside all day when the weather is perfect.

I remember rushing out to play football when it snowed,

I remember opening the fire hydrants in the summer,

I remember living in a lovingly connected community,

I remember…the way it was. If I could send a note to myself back, then I would say, soak in these moments because when they’re gone, they’re gone. The moments will serve as a memory someone will ask you about just when you have almost forgotten them.
